No matter the years married, divorce can still happen

Marriage is a gamble simply because there is no guarantee that the relationship will last for forever. No matter the length of time that a couple is married, divorce is always a very real possibility. When facing a divorce, the most important thing is to be prepared and to know the ins and outs of divorce procedures. Each state handles divorce differently and each state has it's own rules and regulations with respect to divorce. How the parties want to handle the divorce will, to some extent, dictate court procedures.

Michigan native, Michael Moore, a famous director known for his hard-hitting documentaries, filed for divorce from his wife of 21 years. Moore's wife also worked in the movie industry and actually assisted in some of his documentaries. She has not commented on the filing to date. In the divorce filing, Moore indicated that he filed for divorce because, at this point in time, there is no hope for reconciliation. The couple has no children, so property and asset division will likely be the main issue.

In dealing with divorce, a number of things have to be decided. For instance, if there is a prenuptial agreement involved, the courts take this document into consideration when dividing up monetary belongings and other communal property. There are also post-divorce modifications that can be mandated by the courts to address a change in circumstances of the divorced parties.

In addition to pre and post-marital agreements are all the other usual issues that have to be addressed during a divorce like child custody, visitation and alimony, which can make any divorce a very involved process. Knowing and understanding this process is key to ensuring that the divorce goes as smoothly as possible.
