Sarah Palin's daughter may be facing a child custody battle

Divorce is an extremely difficult time for couples in Michigan. Not only must they deal with the emotional turmoil that comes with ending a relationship, but, if children are involved, they must also deal with child custody issues. Questions of child custody can be hard for courts to answer because ultimately the child is going to be with one parent more than the other in most custody cases.

Bristol Palin, daughter of politician Sarah Palin, may be facing a custody battle with the father of her child. The father, Levi Johnston, and Palin had a son together and to date Palin has had primary custody of him. As part of this arrangement, Johnston has to pay a certain amount of money every month for child support. Johnston is seeking to gain further access to his son and is seeking a child custody arrangement where he has equal custody. The court will eventually have to hear the case and decide whether or not a new custody order should be issued in favor of Johnston.

In all child custody cases, the court will base its decision on what is in the best interest of the child. This standard is used to ensure that the court places the child's needs ahead of everything else. The court will look at whether the child will be cared for emotionally and physically as well as being provided for financially. Because children of break-ups are extremely vulnerable to the emotions of their parents, the court's role is vital in protecting the child.

Although child support is a contentious matter, there are instances where decisions are made amicably. However, since child custody situations can be volatile, it is important for one to understand the court's role as well as their rights when engaged in this type of matter.
