Husbands don't stand by their ill wives, seek divorce instead

The end of a marriage denotes the end of an era. In most circumstances, people who are married have been together for a while and have time invested into the relationship. When a couple decides to get a divorce, it is a statement that their time together is over, for whatever reason. The reasons for divorce can vary, and only those in the situation will truly understand why a divorce is taking place.

A recent study has shown that divorce rates are high amongst couples where the wife takes ill. Apparently in these cases the husband is more likely to seek a divorce when his wife is diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. This was seen mostly amongst older couples. The University of Michigan study looked at about 20 years of data to make these findings. However, in this study there were no concrete answers given as to why this is the trend. One idea was that because men may not be instinctual caretakers, the pressures of having to care for a sick spouse might prove to be too much, thus divorce provides a way out.

Whatever the reason for the divorce, each party has rights and responsibilities in the divorce proceedings. Divorces are either contested or uncontested. Uncontested divorces are those divorces in which both parties are in agreement. In an uncontested divorce, most if not all of the issues are disposed of rather amicably. On the other hand, contested divorces occur when the parties are at odds on just about every issue surrounding the divorce. These divorces tend to take up a lot of time and money, as well as court resources.
