What is the Safer People, Safer Streets Initiative?

The U.S. Transportation Secretary has just started an initiative that is known as Safer People, Safer Streets. What is this initiative and what goals does it have?

The initiative is scheduled to run for about 18 months. The main focus is to look at non-motorized transportation to see how it can be made safer. For example, much of the focus is going to be on biking and walking, and it will look at streamlining that traffic and making it safer for those involved.

Ultimately, the goal is to cut back on the amount of pedestrian accidents that happen every year, both in Michigan and all over the United States.

A lot of the project will just include collecting and analyzing the data that is on hand. For instance, this data has already shown that more and more people are turning to non-motorized options, meaning it is more of a priority now than it has been in years.

There are a lot of key facts that expose these trends, and they often deal with young people -- those who are in college or young people in the workforce. One thing that was noted, for instance, was that these people tend to put off getting their driver's licenses for longer, showing that they think of driving as something they may have to do as a necessity, but not necessarily something they want to do.

With more pedestrians on the roads, new tactics can be implemented to keep them safe, such as putting in additional bike lanes or walking paths.

Have you been hit by a car while walking? If you have, you may be able to get compensation for any injuries.
