Different age groups have been seeing very different divorce rate trends

What has been happening with the divorce rate in the past two and a half decades? Well, the answer depends on what age group you are talking about.

Different age groups can vary quite a bit in their divorce rates. A recent Pew Research Center report looked at how the divorce rate shifted between 1990 and 2015 for different age groups.

The report found that divorce has been going down among younger adults. Reportedly, over the above-mentioned period, there was a 21 percent drop in the divorce rate for people ages 25-39.

When you go to higher age groups, however, the report found a very different trend at play. The divorce rate for individuals 40-49 was 14 percent higher in 2015 than it was in 1990. Individuals 50 and older saw an increase of a substantially higher degree over this period; a 109 percent increase. And individuals 65 and older saw an even bigger increase, with their rate around tripling between 1990 and 2015.

Now, as a note, even with divorce rates going down among younger adults and up among older adults, individuals in the 25-39 age group still showed the highest divorce rate in 2015 of the age groups the report looked at.

One wonders what upcoming years will hold for the divorce rate trends of different age groups here in the United States.

Whatever age group a divorcing individual is in, their life can be greatly affected by what happens in their divorce. Each divorce has its own unique set of impactful issues connected to it. What particular issues are present in a person’s divorce can be impacted by many different circumstances, including the person’s age. Individuals of any age going through a divorce may want an experienced divorce attorney’s help with developing an approach for addressing the issues particular to their divorce.
