5 safety tips for Michigan motorcyclists

Riding a motorcycle is fun, but it does come with a unique set of risks. In Michigan, the law does not require all motorcyclists to wear helmets, which has caused a significant increase ofinjuries and fatalities among bikers. If you want to avoid getting injured on your motorcycle, you should keep these safety tips in mind.

1. Wear a helmet

Even if you meet the criteria that allows you to ride without a helmet, wearing one is a key aspect of staying safe. Choose a helmet that adheres to Department of Transportation standards to reduce the chance of head injuries and fatalities.

2. Wear protective gear

Your clothing should be close-fitting and constructed of abrasion-resistant materials, such as leather. Key protective gear includes goggles, full-fingered gloves, boots, long pants and a jacket. Choose protective clothes with bright colors to increase your visibility to motorists

3. Do not share lanes

Motorists generally do not anticipate sharing lanes with other vehicles, including motorcycles. Drivers often will not notice that you are sharing a lane while making a lane change or drifting slightly to one side. Keep a safe distance from cars and make sure drivers can see you.

4. Maintain your motorcycle

Proper maintenance is key to your safety. Make sure your bike is in excellent condition and runs properly. Expand your maintenance beyond the engine and brakes. Frequently check your turn signals, tires and headlights, and make replacements when necessary.

5. Avoid road hazards

Certain road hazards are more dangerous for bikers than motorists, and some might not be obvious. Watch out for and avoid debris, snow and ice, slick surfaces and even rough roads. You can reduce the likelihood of devastating consequences fromcrashing your bike by following these safety guidelines. Unfortunately, injuries can still occur. If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, seek out a personal injury lawyer.
