Millions of additional defective airbags identified

Could it be that millions of cars on the road still could be potential deathtraps because of the very things that are supposed to save lives, their airbags? Indeed, this may be very disappointing and scary, but it appears that Japanese airbag manufacturer remains under fire for providing potentially defective airbags to multiple automakers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 2.7 million additional vehicles should be recalled because of the potential for defective airbags. The automakers covered under this proposed recall include Ford Motor Corp., Nissan Motor Corp., and Mazda Motor Corp. and the vehicles involved include models manufactured between 2005 and 2012.

While it has been some time since the first defective airbags were identified, more than two-thirds of the airbags previously identified as defective have not been repaired. In response to the NHTSA’s recommendation, Nissan noted publicly that it will recall more than 500,000 Versa models and Ford will recall 2.2 million cars and trucks.

These efforts are important because automakers have a continuing duty to inform consumers of defects that could put them in danger and take reasonable steps to remedy the threat. If an automaker fails to do so, and a consumer is injured, the automaker could be held liable. In essence, an injured consumer could seek money damages for pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages and a host of other damages.

It remains to be seen whether further recalls will be issued. If you have questions about your legal rights after being notified about a defect in your vehicle, or you have been injured because of a defective product in your vehicle, an experienced personal injury attorney can help.
