Robinson Cano faces child support battle

Michigan baseball fans are probably familiar with Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees. They may not be aware that Cano is currently embroiled in a child support battle with the mother of his son.

Both the mother and the son currently reside in the Dominican Republic. Cano and the child's mother are at odds over the amount of support that Cano should be providing for his son. The mother claims that Cano does not provide her with enough money to adequately care for their child's day-to-day needs. She also argues that his current support payments do not properly address the cost of living in the Dominican Republic, and that Cano's wealth-his salary last season was $15 million-should be taken into account in setting the amount of support.

According to the mother, Cano has been paying only $600 a month in child support, and she claims the payments do not always get delivered on time. Her attorney says a more appropriate amount would be $25,000 a month.

In Michigan, the law provides that a parent can be obligated to pay child support until the child turns 18 or graduates from high school. In setting the amount of a child support obligation, Michigan courts follow guidelines that take into account the financial resources of both parents as well as the number of overnight stays the child has with each parent. If the circumstances of the obligated parent change, through job loss or other financial setbacks, that parent can request a child support modification from the court. It is important to seek a modification before falling behind in payments.
