Well-known rapper faces child support issues

Child support payments in Michigan are decided by the courts. The court utilizes a child support formula to come up with the amount of child support that must be paid. The formula takes into account the finances of the parties involved, the needs of the child as well as the best interest of the child. The money paid in child support goes to the good and welfare of the child to ensure that the child has everything that he or she needs. The intent of child support is not to punish the parent that has to pay the support. Rather the purpose of child support is completely for the benefit of the child.

Rap star Pras, a former member of the popular musical group the Fugees, is in a child support battle with his ex-girlfriend over their young son. Pras currently pays about $3,000 a month in child support, and his ex is looking to get about $9,000 a month in child support claiming that it is a financial hardship to raise their young son on the $3,000 a month support payment. Pras has been working at a financial firm, and was paid a salary of $72,000 in 2013. Apparently, Pras paid approximately $83,000 to the child support processing center in New York City to take care of any retroactive support from when his son was born.

In general, the courts will have to make a final determination on the amount of monthly support that a party pays. Taking into account all of the child support expenses that go into an issue like this, the courts will apply the formula and make a determination based on that. The formula is not an exact science and the courts can adjust it where appropriate and feasible. Even when the courts make a ruling on child support, that ruling is not written in stone and can be adjusted if just cause is shown.

Child support orders can be amended and are in cases that require it. The paying parent can petition the court to make the payments lower or the receiving parent can petition the court to make the payments higher. Either way, any changes to child support made should be in the child's best interests.
