Criminal defense: Facebook cited in Michigan woman's arrest

Michigan police claim that the social networking website Facebook played a role in a young woman's arrest. Accused of fleeing the scene of an accident, police also claim that she was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Drunk driving allegations are serious, and typically require careful criminal defense planning.

On a recent night, police were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash where one of the cars had been abandoned. According to reports, the driver of the vehicle who allegedly caused the wreck had fled the scene, leaving her empty vehicle behind. The driver apparently returned to a hotel she had been staying at, where front desk staff told police that a woman had returned to the hotel and mentioned being involved in an accident while under the influence.

Police then located a hotel computer that the woman had used, which was apparently still logged into her Facebook account. An open messenger window reportedly contained a message she had written to a friend, in which authorities claim she detailed the wreck and her intoxicated state. Apparently, the driver later admitted to drinking before the wreck, but denied being the person behind the wheel. It is unclear whether the authorities sought or obtained a warrant to examine the woman's Facebook account.

The woman's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .12 through a Breathalyzer test, and police also say that her license was expired. She was arrested and charged with multiple accusations, including driving drunk and leaving an injury scene. Serious criminal charges such as these can have devastating legal consequences that can affect an individual's personal and professional life. However, most people in Michigan can minimize this impact by creating a solid criminal defense foundation in as timely a manner as possible.
