Criminal defense might be top priority re McDonald's DUI charge

A Michigan man was arrested after what police say was erratic behavior at a closed fast food restaurant. Accused of driving while under the influence of alcohol, police took to social media to describe the events leading up to his arrest. It is not clear what effect -- if any -- the police's internet ramblings might have on his respective criminal defense.

Police used Facebook -- a popular social media website -- when releasing information about the alleged incident. They claim that a 57-year-old man was intoxicated when he pulled into the drive-thru of a closed McDonald's restaurant, where he waited for approximately 15 minutes. During that time he apparently honked his horn repeatedly and expressed outrage that his order had not been taken.

A police cruiser was apparently parked nearby, and the officers claim they watched these events unfold, although it is not clear why they did not act while the man was parked in the drive-thru. The officers did not initiate a traffic stop until the man left the McDonald's, allegedly driving over a curb as he re-entered traffic. At some point during the traffic stop they suspected that he might be intoxicated, and he was arrested for drunk driving.

Drunk driving charges can have serious consequences, including steep fines and jail time. Many people lose their driving privileges as a result of being charged, even if they are never convicted. A cohesive criminal defense is necessary for Michigan defendants hoping to minimize the impact of these charges. For some this means negotiating a plea deal under the careful guidance of their defense counsel, while others can achieve the best possible outcome by fighting the allegations through trial court proceedings.
