Criminal defense: Michigan driver charged with DUI

A Michigan man was arrested after a traffic stop in the early hours of the morning. He was charged with drunk driving and possession of a firearm while intoxicated as well as resisting arrest. It is not clear if he has any criminal defense plans yet.

A police officer spotted the off-duty deputy driving at speeds of 90 mph on I-75 at around 1 a.m. The officer initiated a traffic stop after he noticed the driver almost hit another vehicle. It is not clear what caused the attending officers to suspect that the 27-year-old man was under the influence of alcohol or if they utilized any roadside tests, such as a Breathalyzer or field sobriety test. At some point before his arrest, the driver did tell the officers that he had a pistol on his person.

The driver was arrested, handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car for transportation. He allegedly managed to move his handcuffs from his back to in front of his person, at which point he tried to harm himself. Police claim that the man was combative after they stopped the car to help him. After this incident, he was transported to a hospital and then taken to an area jail where he is currently being held on $20,000 bail.

Unlike with other charges, criminal defense needs for drunk driving allegations usually arise much earlier. DUI charges typically move forward quickly, and Michigan drivers may even lose their driving privileges without ever being convicted. Careful and timely action can help minimize some of these potential consequences and can keep some defendants behind the wheel.
