Anna Faris and Chris Pratt take collaborative family law approach

TV shows and movies often like to depict divorces as all-out legal battles, but a real-life celebrity couple recently took a much more collaborative approach. Anna Faris and Chris Pratt settled their family law issues through a private judge, but details regarding the settlement are emerging. Michigan movie fans might be surprised by some of their choices or inspired to incorporate them into their own ongoing divorces.

Faris and Pratt married 2009, and in Aug. 2017 they jointly announced their upcoming split. Divorce papers were filed in Dec. 2017, and by Oct. 2018 everything was finalized. Although their prenuptial agreement probably helped with processes that most people find difficult, such as property division, they were also able to find agreeable solutions to topics not addressed within the prenup.

The two have a 6-year-old son, and they have agreed to share joint custody. They also agreed that they will continue to live within five miles of one another until their son finishes the sixth grade. Faris and Pratt set out standards for open communication too, including that they must provide the other parent at least 30 days written notice if they plan on traveling internationally with their son.

Support payments are also a little different than most people might expect. Not only did both Faris and Pratt waive their rights to alimony, but neither is paying child support for the time being. Instead, they plan to maintain a joint bank account which they will both fund and then use to cover their son's expenses.

The couple worked out their settlement outside of court and then had a judge sign off on the agreement. This approach is often less expensive and less time-consuming than more traditional approaches to divorce, like litigation. However, it is not appropriate for everyone in Michigan, and those who do pursue this path should still consider the benefits of having dedicated representation on their side when dealing with family law matters.
