Criminal defense: Police charge man with history of DUIs

Michigan police recently arrested a man for allegedly getting behind the wheel of his vehicle while intoxicated. According to reports, the man also attempted to flee from police on foot. As this is not his first DUI offense, timely and careful attention to criminal defense may be helpful in minimizing some of the legal consequences he is facing.

The 37-year-old man was apparently driving with his high beams on at around 1 a.m., but he failed to dim them when he came across a police officer. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over. Instead, he continued driving before suddenly parking in a private residence driveway. At that point, he got out of his pickup truck and then tried to flee the scene on foot.

The officer was able to stop the man in the backyard of the same residence where he abandoned his truck. It is not clear how the officer determined that the driver was intoxicated. However, it was noted that he had a total of five past convictions for drinking and driving and that his license was suspended at the time of his arrest.

Authorities often utilize field sobriety tests, blood tests or a combination of both to determine whether a driver is intoxicated. For Michigan defendants, understanding the methods used to determine their alleged intoxication can be important when crafting a solid criminal defense foundation. By having a better grasp on their charges and evidence, defendants can move forward in a manner that will help them achieve the best possible outcome.
